New HOY Participatory Trip Theme – LGBT and gender studies

HOY is proud to announce a new addition to its participatory trip offerings! This January, we will be initiating our first ever LGBT and gender focused alternative break program. Although HOY has worked with a few LBGT based programs here in Cuernavaca during regular participatory travel (for example, Casa de la Red – cleaning up ravines and CD4 – passing out condoms at gay-friendly clubs), this trip will be our first full-week of participatory travel with this theme.

Students from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California (a school that has been working with HOY for several years now), will be coming in January of 2010 during their winter term. In addition to LGBT and gender issues, students will learn about different topics regarding Mexican culture and Spanish language. Over this almost two-week-long trip students will do mini projects and participatory travel, as well as partake in discussions and exchanges about LGBT and gender issues in Mexico – learning what the movement is about here and how it is developing. These activities and interactions will take place here in Cuernavaca, and in surrounding towns in Morelos.

Currently the HOY team is cultivating new relationships for these projects, visiting several neighboring towns. Our most recent connection is with a women’s group in Cuentepec that has their own business making and selling pottery. The exact details of this trip will be finalized in the following weeks. This trip theme is quite unique – there are very few other organizations that offer these topics for participatory travel or as educational trip study – so if you think that the LGBT and gender movements are only about gay parades and girl power, it’s time for you to take a participatory trip with HOY, mi amig@!
