Zocalo “Eye Candy” is Must-See

Zocalo Imagery is a total success - even if the photos are not.

Zocalo Imagery is a total success - even if the photos are not.

Alright – no one is going to believe me if I say I’m almost glad these few cel-phone pics from last night are not really any good.

I could try to justify them by saying “oh you have to go anyway – it’s that good” – but if you go – you’ll see why snapping photos is difficult – particularly when your mouth is hanging open.

You should go. The projections onto the national palace, the eastern side of el Zocalo, are that good. And worth going to witness again and again. Tonight and tomorrow, Friday and Saturday – 20:30 and again at 21:30.

If you’re in the city – do yourself a favor and plan on attending.

You’ll have to stomach a short video – projected onto a couple of small screens on the far corners of the Zocalo – that show some various famous and not-famous Mexicans mouthing platitudes about how they love Mexico. That’s over quickly and you get to see why so many people love Mexico.

Yes that's your National Palace

The projections onto the Palace are experimental, playful, precise and – most certainly – they border on the psychedelic – much more fun than a bunch of Benito Juarez grimaces and Mexican flag graphics. It’s the sort of monumentalism – and massive experimentalism – that we can expect to see more and more of as the bicentennial celebrations kick in – and that will probably become passé before the next year is up.

This was certainly a success – as much a tribute to good graphics and to wonderful advances in laser projections as it is to the Country that lets it happen and that lets a few tens of thousands of people fill up its main square just to oggle. Anyone who has played with a projector or contemplated the possibilities of public projection should appreciate this few minutes – a bit less than 30 minutes.

I’ll try to update this post later today when more photos come online.
