Q: How much time will I spend working at Casa HOY?

HOY Volunteers paint at a site near Cuernvaca
This is the third in a series of posts, Frequently Asked Questions, from our Blogging Partners at HOY Community who provide volunteer services and who host volunteer travel weeks throughout the Cuernavaca area. The questions are among the most common posed to them by visitors considering a week’s vacation and volunteering at Casa HOY.
HOY prides itself on being flexible to the needs and wants of volunteers. As well, we’re sensitive to the amount of time each partner organization is able to host volunteers. Typically that means that between 3 – 5 hours of volunteer work are done each day.
During the summer (June to mid-August), when children are out of school, they have more free time to spend on activities, and volunteer work can be scheduled throughout the day. During the school year most volunteer work is done in the afternoon.
During our most recent participatory trip, volunteers worked from 10-2 and then had the rest of the day free. A week of participatory travel here in Cuernavaca generally gives you enough free time to see a different museum or cultural site each day, and to spend the evening enjoying a chela at a local bar or catching an Indie flick at the Cine Morelos.
As mentioned in a previous post, there are all kinds of sites to see in Cuernavaca, and there are number of places HOY recommends you visit throughout the week. Museums are usually closed on Mondays, so that is the perfect time to wander downtown getting your bearings and to visit the artisan’s market next to the Palacio de Cortés (better to get your shopping done first!). And of course, our list of restaurants includes totally affordable meals at the best restaurants in Cuernavaca.
Whatever your plans, HOY is happy to work with you to organize and arrange a week that will allow you to maximize your time here in the “City of Eternal Spring.”
