One more reason I love Mexico (video)
You know – I’ve lived in Mexico for 35 years and I’ve visited many many parts of this wonderful country; Oaxaca, Uruapan, Cuernavaca, San Miguel de Allende and Puerto Vallarta… and the list goes on and on including small towns outside of Puerto Vallarta in Nayarit or near Toluca or Querétaro for a family picnic – a Saturday respite from the traffic and everyday’s overwhelming schedule - the kids to school, me to work, fix lunch and be wonderful wife to boot!!
But today – for once – I was able to stay home and I just happened to hear a song by Rocío Dúrcal - a song written by Juan Gabriel. (And you better know who Juan Gabriel is by now.) And to be honest – I understood the lyrics and I felt like I understood everything. What a blessing. If I had stayed in the US all my life would I ever have had the opportunity to learn another language and hear this incredible music? Are all Mexicans romantics? You bet! And US citizens could probably use a little of that.
This is just the tip of the iceberg of why being a citizen in more than one country has been one of the greatest steps of my life. I’ll be writing more of this in the next couple of weeks, but for now, if you’re interested in Rocío Dúrcal there is hardly anything in English out there. And surfing around I’m finding that almost all of the good studio recordings of her songs are being yanked off of the internet, so below is a live recording, still available on you-tube. If you’ve got more information on her, by all means leave a comment! And if you really are a fan and want to read about her in Spanish, the place to go is Rocío Dúrcal; Hasta que Vuelvas.
